TEACH — FOR UKRAINE

A non-governmental organisation that works to ensure that every child in Ukraine can realise their potential, regardless of their place of birth or residence.

We engage the best graduates and young professionals from diverse backgrounds to invest their skills and energy to teach for two years in Ukraine’s rural schools, where they become role models, open new opportunities in children’s lives and contribute to the development of their communities.

MYKOLA, VILLAGE OF MELESHKY

Hi there! My name is Mykola, I'm 19. I'm from the village of Meleshky in the Lviv region. Last month I returned from Poland as I was installing solar panels there. This is what almost all the guys in our village do. Well, at least I went with two of my classmates. In general, there were 10 of us in the class. We skipped a lot of lessons because we had to either harvest potatoes or cut hay, or the road to the school was blocked because of snow. Then I barely passed the final exams after the 11th grade and entered the vocational school to become a carpenter. I won't get higher education, although my sister from Lviv says that I draw very well and could become a web designer just like that. I don't know what it is yet but she says it's interesting and cool. We had neither computer science at school, nor English, nor physics. But that's okay, I have a Karta Polaka, even though it's a pity that now there is not much work in Poland.

Story 2 \

ANDRII, CITY OF LVIV

Hi! I am Andrii, I am 18 years old and I am studying applied mathematics at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. I didn't really want to but my class teacher at school was a mathematician, she made me study a little, and well, I did quite well. I didn't miss school, and in the 11th grade I had tutors, so I passed the final exams well and even received a scholarship at university. I don't know yet what I want to do in the future, but I'll be good with my applied mathematics degree, I'm sure of it. Maybe I will teach or become a programmer, travel the world or make my own scientific discovery. I didn't like studying very much, but I know for sure that anything is possible with a quality education.

GOAL

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS — ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A program to change the country.

For a school to participate in Teach for Ukraine is much more than just an opportunity to get a fellow who will teach a particular subject. It is also about extracurricular activities for children, opportunities for professional development for the administration and teaching staff, and an environment of constant aspiration towards new educational opportunities in the community of like-minded people. Each school is a separate story of success and challenges, so Teach for Ukraine aims to understand the request of a particular partner school and work with that request throughout the program.

The program's fellows are young people who have a deep knowledge of one of the school subjects, a strong motivation to teach at school, and are ready to move to a rural community for 2 years to participate in Teach for Ukraine. We take the selection process very seriously, so only 5-10% of applicants become finalists. The average age of the fellow is 25 years old, all of them are from different parts of Ukraine and have higher education under their belt. Most importantly, the program sees in each of them a future educational leader.

Teach for Ukraine has built a multilevel system of training and support throughout the program, which consists of the Summer Institute, a master's program in educational and pedagogical sciences of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, mentoring and methodological support. The Summer Institute is a five-week educational program which is usually held in July-August and is obligatory for all fellows. The program of the Summer Institute includes classes in pedagogy and developmental psychology, leadership, educational management, teamwork and the practice of conducting classes accompanied by experienced teachers. Fellows who do not have a pedagogical education, at the beginning of the program enter the master's program in educational and pedagogical sciences, developed by the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University in partnership with Teach for Ukraine. Each fellow has a mentor who accompanies them from their first day at school through regular calls, class visits, consultations, methodological assistance and feedback.

Fellows can realize themselves in any field from education to business. A large percentage of Teach for Ukraine alumni keep working in the education field. This can be either a continuation of work in a public school as a subject teacher or a methodologist for educational courses, or work as a mentor for other teachers and much more. The main thing is that after 2 years of the program, a fellow becomes an educational leader with a deep understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the system, with a wide range of acquired and developed skills, which makes them a valuable candidate in the labor market.
